Late last night winding down from the festive fun of the day, I was reading through a drabble collection. You know the kind, the ones with more than a dozen different fandoms and rare pairings mixed in with fan favorites that you stumble across when you are reading pretty much everything that is available for a rare pairing (last night it was Ardeth Bey/Jonathan Carnahan because there was a Mummy marathon on TV the other night). This particular drabble collection was all about the soulmate/soul mark trope, it was a funny mix of canon and alternate universes but they mostly stuck to the premise that soulmate identifying marks were known and an excepted part of society. While I must confess that this is not my favorite trope, I have over the years read some quite nice stories using it. And as I moved from drabble to drabble that was when I had a funny thought.
I should probably mention that I still love Almost Human despite it's early cancellation and ship Jorian, as well as Daforge from Star Trek TNG, and I've been eyeing Detroit: Become Human interestedly. As to the thought, I wouldn't go so far as to call it a plot bunny more of a fannish musing, I wondered what it would mean in a canon with androids achieving sentience to have soulmate identifying marks start to show up on androids (Or potentially have soul marks not be on the skin like with humans but in the circuits). Would this simplify the argument that androids could have souls, or would it make it even more complicated? Would it be more or less acceptable to have an android/human pair or a pair of androids? Would unscrupulous types try to put soul marks on androids to take advantage of them or potentially other humans? Would androids love or hate the marks? So many questions, though I'm no writer (just a daydreamer ;)).
I'm open to thoughts, comments, recs, or other peoples tired musings about soul marks, androids, or whatever. :) And I do hope everyone is having a good post-Christmas day!
