Challenge #1

In your own space, update your fandom information! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

  • Transformative Works Policy: Here on Dreamwidth and on AO3
  • Current Passion: My current passions have a decided wlw bend to them including Wednesday and Gideon the Ninth. A touch of First Kill thought that's bittersweet.
  • Where to Find Me: I'm back on my Tumblr BS, lol, here on DW less then I aught to be, WordPress staying the most update rec-wise.
  • Master List: Oh man, you are going to have to precede straight to the website as there is no space or time to master list ALL of my recs. Lol.
  • Anything Else: I can't believe I missed Snowflake in 2022, but when I think back to where I was it makes more sense. Good news is I'm in a MUCH better place now and feeling like I could be up to the challenge. ;D
isabellerecs: Stonehenge at Sunset (stonehenge)
Welcome! I’m Isabelle Disraeli. I am in my early forties living with my spouse in the Southeastern United States. Please do feel like you may have a good long poke around and if you feel comfortable in saying hi, I'd love to hear from you. And if you don't hear from me right away, please forgive me I can't always keep up here but I'm always come back around. ;D

I've been recommending fanfiction (slash, femslash & het) almost daily since April 2014 and am off and on working on the backlog of recs that I did before joining Dreamwidth December 2018. Because I can schedule posts on my WordPress blog that is where one can keep a little more up-to-date with my recs.

||Fanfiction Recommendations by Isabelle Disraeli||

On my blog I keep a running list of my fandoms, though these are by no means ALL of my fandoms. Multi-Fandom does not quite seem to cover it. ;D I go with whatever seems to strike my fancy. I have plenty of 'ships, some OTPs, and a few NOTPs but I am very much a "ship and let ship" sort of person.

A couple years ago, I'd started to produce more varied content including moodboards, and recording podfics of some of the stories that I'd recommended in the past. I've also been producing podfic & fanfic covers for myself and others. I also write on occasion, definitely of a pornish persuasion.

Let's see, let's see what else. I have always worked in libraries and will likely always work in libraries. I'm asexual/biromantic, and identify as genderqueer with she/they pronouns. (Oh, and if someone does not state their preferences I will usually use they/them as my go to.) I am weak to cute things, especially fuzzy cute things.

Last but certainly not least the Transformative Works Policy: I give blanket, non-exclusive (and ecstatic) permission to use any of the works I've posted as inspiration for your own transformative work. I'd only ask for you to credit back to the work and to let me know so I can come squee over your stuff!! Also if I have made a work (moodboard, cover, etc.) that was inspired by YOUR work, you totally have my permission to put the cover or what have you on your own page with credit.

Challenge #15

In your own space, Talk about Your Snowflake Experience. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

This is my third time doing Snowflake in as many years, and so far there is no law of diminishing returns. I love this fannish kick-start to my year, and after last year it felt even more important to connect with other fannish folks. I was super stoked this year that I was able to (mostly) stay on track with the challenges, I know it's not necessary but I definitely feel a sense of accomplishment when I manage to. (I looked back at my entries last year and about half way through I fell off the wagon and had to play catch up. I also discovered that I'd fulfilled two out of my three goals for the year, so \o/ woohoo!!) I had SOOO much fun making all of those fanfic covers, and I'm so glad that so many of you responded. :D

For the last two years, at the end of Snowflake, I have lied to myself and said that I would be consistent about being on DW, but this year I'm not going to pretend. I'm going to wander away, sometimes for extended periods of time, but this is my fannish home and I can promise myself that I will wander back. So I'd like to wish you all a happier and healthier year than the last with all sorts of fannish goodies! <3

Challenge #14

In your own space, remix an existing work into a new media, and/or rec three or more remixes that do the same. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Funnily enough, for this challenge it was actually easier to make my own interpretation of another's work rather than to rec some remixes. I'm sure I've read, enjoyed, and rec'ed some in the past but, uh, none come to mind. So my idea was to work up a moodboard remix as it were for one of the stories that I had previously created a cover for, [personal profile] spikedluv's "eat dessert first".

So, this was supposed to be a year long bingo card, but I found that it was difficult to find pairings that I'd not read at least casually so I was having to make a concerted effort to find one's that fit the criteria. But it doesn't take much for me to get interested in a pairing enough to try it though so . . . this didn't take all that long. ;D

Challenge #13

In your own space, tell us about 3 fandom resources you use or enjoy. (One or two is fine, especially if you're in a smaller fandom!) Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Hmm, I guess none of the reference sites that I am prone to using are especially obscure but I can give you a run down of my standard procedure for trying to break into a new fandom when I'm still on the fence about going right to consuming the canon material.

First I head to Tumblr, yes even now, chiefly because one of the fastest ways to get interested in a new fandom/pairing is to look at folk's fanart, gifsets, and moodboards. That jump-starts things nicely.

Fandom wikis are my next stop. Recently I've spent a fair amount of time on Memory Alpha as I have nostalgia for all things 90s Star Trek. I'd seen the shows and even watched some recently but my memory of some of it has degraded over time so I really appreciate the work that goes into the fandom wikis.

Last but certainly not least, I head to AO3. Can I say how helpful the exclude buttons have been, but if I really want to explore the rarest of pairings I head to the Tag page.

My favorite source though, is all of you guys! My TBR list always grows during Snowflake from all of your wonderful suggestions and that is part of the reason why I look forward to it all year. :D

So I know I've been doing a lot of cover arts, but I was inspired to do a few Snowflake banners. :D

Challenge #10

In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, creator, episode, or it could be your fandom friends. Share your love and squee as loud as you want to. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Dear Fandom,

I plan to write just a few lines about what Fandom has meant to me in these very trying times. I'm finding it hard and have indeed been trying since yesterday, but being an American in the last few weeks has been an emotional roller coaster even beyond what has gone before and even though yesterday was arguably happy it was also quite draining. Fandom is always there regardless of how many spoons I have to devote to it though, and that is an immensely comforting thing. That there are like-minded people out there and willing to share their favorite things with me is so very special and important to both my happiness and mental wellbeing. Thank you all for being that community that we call Fandom from the very bottom of my heart.

Bless you, Isabelle

Challenge #9

In your own space, brag about yourself. Tell us what things you've done that you're proud of; the things that make you the wonderful person you are. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

So you would have thought that I'd planned this, but this challenge came as a surprise to me but it is a PERFECT follow up to the last one for me so I can show off the fanfic covers that I was able to make for all the lovely folks that commented. :D It was really a god-send for me as the spouse was out of town, but I didn't spend the whole time worried as there was A-R-T to do. ;) So thank you to all of the requesters for contributing to my emotional well being. :D And without further ado, just click on the cover for a larger view:

These bottom two on the right are the covers from two of the podfics that I have recorded in the last few months, that I'm also jazzed about. :D Oh, and I almost forgot, the spouse arrived home safe and sound late last night, so we're all good there too.

EDIT: I've got a few late comers to add to my collection! :D

Challenge #8

In your own space, create a wishlist. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

So my list, isn't so much a list. I wish to be able to create more podfic/story covers but I would like to do it for someone who has asked maybe even before they have posted. It just feels a little weird sidling up to podficcers/authors and dropping a "hey, I don't if you'll like this or care but here is a cover for your work". There is a tag that says cover art welcome, but honestly it seems like only the same few creators use it over and over. I don't know, I feel like flexing those creative muscles. Any takers?
isabellerecs: Scarlet Witch Seated (scarlet witch seat)
Funnily enough, I've never done any sort of fandom bingo card but this one posted by [personal profile] thenewbuzwuzz  for the 7th Challenge looked rather up my alley so I thought I'd give it a go. I guess the plan is to update this month to month to show my progress. :D

Challenge #7

In your own space, create your own challenge. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

My brain is just not thinking thoughts at this juncture so I don't feel equal to coming up with a grand challenge or even a little challenge, instead I'm going to follow the example of a few others and simply pose a question that one might think about and comment the answer if one is comfortable.

"If you had to choose only ONE fandom/pairing that you were allowed to consume fandom media about (fics, art, vids, etc.) which would it be? And potentially why, if you'd like?  - - - - My own long time ride or die pairing has been Bagginshield, and I would be very surprised if that one was ever supplanted. (Honestly though, I'd go a little crazy if I wasn't able to flit from fandom to fandom like the polyfandomous slut that I am. ;) But I would be happy the longest with Bagginshield.)

Challenge #6

In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Okay, so I made this SOOO much harder than it should have been and I hear you saying "But Isabelle, it's in your name Isabelle-recs. Recs should be right up your alley?!" But this last year I haven't read all that much and all the stuff I've read and want to rec is being rec'd in short order and I didn't want to be redundant. So I hemmed and I hawed, and I thought well maybe if I had a "theme" it would be easier. But then I waffled about what the theme should be. You see where this is going. I've worked myself up to a ridiculous degree until in an epiphanic flash it came to me: I've been doing recs since 2014 and it might be nice to pick out some gems to share from each of the years I've been blogging. I find picking favorites very difficult but these are definitely ones that I have read or listened to numerous times and I hope you will enjoy them too.

Challenge #5

In your own space, promote a canon/talk about a part of canon that you love. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

So canon and I have a weird and often distant relationship. I consume only sparing amounts of canon content spending the vast majority of my time on fandom content. *shrug* Not super sure why but last year was different for a lot of reasons, some the same as everyone else, some more personal, but I found myself reading books (mostly for work) and watching shows (me time). The big standout of those was Netflix's She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. I really hadn't been familiar with She-Ra before except to be able to recognize the character and know that she was associated with He-Man, in spite or that (or maybe because of that) I found watching She-Ra to be an fresh, entertaining, and magical experience. I watched it all over a weekend, then turned right around and watched it again but slower. It was still so good the second time around. For years I had held Avatar the Last Airbender up as the finest example of the cartoon medium but She-Ra has finally deposed it for it's top spot. That is due in large part to the fact that this show gave me so many things that I usually have to turn to fandom for: a queer romance where the queer-ness is not the point, neither of the leads are treated as "the love interest", all of the marvelous diverse representation, and almost all of the characters are humanized and redeemed in a fashion by the end (save the big bad and one particularly bad piece of work who is still humanized in her awfulness).

All in all, it was truly a pleasure that I'm sure has been explained by far more eloquent people than me. But I'm giving it a ten out of ten. :D

Challenge #4

In your own space, create some goals. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I'll be honest, since the pandemic started I and I think many others have had a hard time fixing "goals" especially long-term ones in our minds while we are all in a perpetual start of "wait and see". Even fannish goals seem somehow too much to hope for with a world that seems determined to shift course every other month, week, day. But in an effort to recapture a sense of hopeful expectancy I will set the bar rather low for myself. . .

  • Work through the list of works that I have received gracious permission to record as podfic. :D
  • Read more. (I read so little this last year, emotional fatigue I think, and that has meant that my recs which I used to have ready sometimes many months in advance have many times been posted same day. I would like to feel like I had some breathing room.)
  • But ultimately, do what I have the spoons for, and let the rest go. (Works for fannishness and life. ;))

Challenge #3: Guess Who's Coming to Dinner

In your own space, tell us who, from one of your fandoms, would you most want to have dinner with (or tea, or a random afternoon visit), And why? This could be a creator, an actor, a costumer, a set designer, a director, a character, a composer, anybody! What would you talk about? What are you dying to know? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Oh man, this is SUCH a good challenge. I am an introvert's introvert to be sure so the thought of a dinner party is just overwhelming but having little "get to know you" outings with a person would be super cool. The first one I could think of was spending a morning in a coffee shop with Jane Austen people-watching and trading observations about the other customers and baristas. I feel like she would have had fun and entertaining insights about people viewed even casually. I also would not mind going to lunch with Foggy Nelson, I feel like he would be both fun and funny to hang out with. I would love to attend a hobbit's tea with Bilbo Baggins, who I feel would be a good host as well as being a storyteller par excellence. Hmm, then maybe an evening walk with Din Djarin and little Grogu, something chill and quiet.

There are many more I'm sure, but this sounds like a full day of socializing and I would probably need a few days to recover after. ;D

Hey, guys! Happy New Year!!

Gosh, I'm starting out behind but I did have a lovely, long weekend with the spouse so I'll not beat myself up about it. ;) I did a double check on my sticky and it was good to go though I thought I'd add something about the new types of content I've been working on since last year.

I'm excited to get started! :D
