Title: The Sufficient Cause
Author: mightymads
Canon: Star Trek AOS
Pairing: James ‘Jim’ Kirk/Spock
Rating: Explicit [NC-17]
Word Count: 28,284
Summary: Soon after returning to the post of First Officer, Spock realized why his older counterpart had prompted him to stay on the Enterprise. However, in the course of service it also became clear to him that friendship with the captain would impair their efficiency as a command team. Nearly losing Jim to Khan’s rampage a year later makes Spock reconsider.

Recommendation: This was so awesome. Most of the time post-ID stories just can’t wait for Jim to be better and off to space for the five-year mission, this one takes the time for him to recover. I also love this author’s take on Jim’s mom and brother, they are a lot more sympathetic then usually portrayed. That’s not to say Jim had a perfect childhood, bad things happened to him but that was in spite of him having a loving family not because he had a negligent or cruel family. I can dig it. Finally all of this is from the point of view of Spock, an adorably smitten Spock being drawn ever closer into orbit around Jim now that he realizes the futility of holding himself aloof.
