isabellerecs: Scarlet Witch with Harp (scarlet witch harp)

Being on Dreamwidth has been something of a crash course in the old school way of doing things, and my Tumblr-using ass has been a little startled by some of the differences.

Late last night I finally discovered the Themes page. Oh man, you don't know how relieved I was because I had begun to think that I was going to have to learn some HTML to get things to look different and I was not sure I was going to be equal to the task.

Apparently I also have to be circumspect about my tags, because unlike Tumblr or WordPress one cannot just tag to your heart's content. There seems to be a limit of 1,000 which sounds generous but I was already up to 100 and I'd only done a dozen posts. o_O Oops, so I'm learning to "Manage Tags" :D

Though backdating posts appears to be a thing (that I hope doesn't spam peoples' reading page D:), there doesn't seem to be a straightforward way to schedule posts in the future. I'm a little bummed about that and I'm going to go on record to say that my posting will probably be less even and regular than I would like.

All in all, I feel like I'm finding my feet and in the meantime I'm having some pretty cool chats with a few of you. :D Here endth my rambling.

In order to avoid spamming people's dashes when backdating posts, you have to click "Do not show on Reading Page" (or whatever that box is).

I'm struggling to get used to these tags again too! I miss being able to mutter under my breath at the end of a post.

You can post-date posts, too (IIRC!) by putting a future date in the date box, so if you want posts to show up on Saturdays but write them whenever during the week that's one way of doing it.

Though, most people here post as-and-when and don't necessarily have a posting schedule.

I'm not sure if you can queue stuff, but if you post-date something, it won't show up on anyone's reading page until the time/date set when posted. i.e. if I posted something now (8th December 2018 at 03:24am - jiminy!!!) and post-dated it to the 25th December 2018 at 11:10am, it won't show up on your reading page until Christmas Day at whatever time it is when it's 11:10am for me, with my journal set to GMT.

Hi there! I noticed you friended me, so I friended back! (I still use LJ terminology for a whole lot of stuff, but a lot of us oldies do.)

Well, DW forked from LJ ages back, and they're still dealing with a lot of the truly shitty back-end stuff that LJ patched together, so stuff that's been improved since DW forked is going to be new. Most of LJ mark-up still works, but there's some really good new stuff...

For example: (lj user="sharpiefan") and (username=sharpiefan) will both get my name, and (username=sharpiefan site=ao3.org) will give a link to AO3 - that works for a lot of other places like Twitter, LJ and (I think) Tumblr. Just use the HTML <> brackets rather than parenthesis!

This is a very useful tip! Thank you! If we want to do this, do we check the "don't show on reading page" thing when we're post-dating?

That'll stop it showing on your reading page even when that dates arrives. A quick way to check whether something's showing or not showing is to look at the reading page of someone who's subscribed to you.

DW introduced the sticky post idea (and then gave us TWO!) but post-dating something used to be a way to sticky something, back in LJ days, and those didn't show for anyone else.

There's always the edit button if something hasn't worked out quite how you wanted, too!

Oh! [personal profile] miome did a really good post about a queue work-around using DW's post-via-email capability. Don't know if she's actually tried it out yet, but it sounds like an intriguing idea :)

I wish I could schedule things, too, partly because I feel VERY ENERGETIC and want to post, like 5x a day. I've been channeling that energy into comments and friending instead, lmao.

On the other hand, I wish people would post MORE, because I keep refreshing my reading page and seeing the same stuff. On Tumblr, the thing would suggest me interesting posts/people and at least I'd get new stuff that way. Here, I guess I just need to follow more people!

Keep an eye on the news comm (you ought to be automatically subscribed to it) - when we had an influx of LJ refugees, they had an importer that allowed people to bring over LJ content automatically, though there was a backlog. I don't know whether they can get it running for Tumblr users - it'd be nice, but Tumblr being very heavily visual for a lot of people might make it harder.

But, DW's run by fans for fans, so I'm sure they're working on something like that - and if not, they'll have really good reasons.

Yes, all the talking is so great! I mentioned this over in [personal profile] lockedinjohnlock's recent entry-- nobody would ever respond to anything I posted at Tumblr, which made me feel really lonely. It's nice to actually have some conversations again!

Communities are a good way of getting to know people ([community profile] anything_aos if you like Age of Sail stuff)... I don't post as much as I used to, but with a new influx of people, communities will revitalise and become active again.

Also. [community profile] snowflake_challenge will be running its annual fannish/friending challenge come the New Year - definitely worth taking a look! And that really doesn't depend on what fandom you're in, fans understand fans and it's all about celebrating that fannishness.

Also, I'm the current editor of [community profile] despatches, which I let go dormant for a bit, but I'm going to attempt to post that regularly again, if I get enough links to make it worthwhile. It's worth checking out even the backlog there for some other stuff.

(Love the Fourth Doctor icon, BTW! :D )

A newsletter!!! I LOVE newsletters (for getting info, but just for themselves as a fannish output thing), and I've been trying to find ones that were still active! Subscribing now. ♥

I'm sorry; that was my fault; I'm so used to the (lj user="name") version that it took me a few goes to work out the generic version!!!

(user name=snowflake_challenge)

(user name=whatever site=ao3.org) or (user name=whatever site=tumblr.com) (DW supports Twitter, LJ, AO3, Tumblr - I don't know about Wordpress, Blogger or Pillowfort. You do have to include the correct suffix for the site, though - .org or .com or whatever.)

What I like to do is organize my tags my themes. Example fandom: Buffy The Vampire Slayer, anything buffy related goes under that tag. Then I might break things down by characters. I think that has helped me conserve.

You could try a compromise and tag them by initial rather than full name?

Yes, exactly that. It'd narrow things down a bit for search purposes, and save some tag space for you.
